Why Harm Reduction?

Substance use and overdose is a prolific and pervasive issue that affects individuals, families, and communities. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health Drug Surveillance Unit fentanyl related overdose mortality surged 106.2 percent from May 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021, compared to the same period the prior year. The Athens-Clarke County area is not exempt from this epidemic.

Harm reduction services save lives by playing a significant role in preventing drug-related deaths and offering access to healthcare, social services, and treatment. Harm reduction services decrease overdose fatalities, help prevent the spread of chronic diseases such as HIV/HCV, and reduce the risk of life-threatening infections related to unsterile drug injection. Harm reduction stands in contrast to all or nothing abstinence programs often required of individuals who use substances.

“Harm reduction meets people where they are, but does not leave them there. Access Point is a space where people are treated with dignity, respect, love and compassion, no matter their relationship with substances. We help people stay alive, no matter what.”
